Manchester United could be forced into the goalkeeper market this summer, with David de Gea not looking any closer to extending his current deal at the club.

De Gea is out of contract at the end of this season and although talks with the Spaniard are said to be positive, he recently rejected an offer to sign fresh terms on reduced wages.

The 32-year-old has been a mainstay in the side since he joined the club in 2011 but there is no guarantee that he will remain at the club past this season and now, Borussia Dortmund star Gregor Kobel has become the latest player linked with becoming his replacement.

Kobel is one of the Bundesliga’s hottest properties at the moment, impressing for Dortmund since he joined the club from Stuttgart in 2021.

Kobel is in line to replace Yann Sommer at international level but the FC Bayern shot-stopper remains the undisputed first-choice for his nation.

According to German outlet Blick, via Sport Witness, United’s interest in Kobel is real and that har prompted Dortmund into trying to extend Kobel’s contract at the Signal Iduna Park.

Kobel is already contracted at the German club for three more years but as per the report, Dortmund are keen on tying him down to another long-term deal.

It’s claimed that United’s interest is due to the potential need for a replacement for De Gea, with Dortmund said to be valuing Kobel at €40-50m.

SN’s verdict…
Brentford’s David Raya and FC Porto’s Diogo Costa have been named as the two main candidates to replace De Gea but Kobel is another viable alternative.

As mentioned above, however, he is unlikely to come on the cheap and Dortmund are skilled at having their valuations met and they will not budge if they don’t get what they are looking for.
