Fulham manager charged by FA after post-match rant following Manchester United defeat

Fulham manager Marco Silva has been charged by the Football Association over comments he made following their defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

The Fulham manager has been accused of improper conduct after he questioned the actions of referee Chris Kavanagh when things didn’t go his side’s way.

“It’s difficult for us to understand,” Silva said at the time (via Daily Mail). “Unfortunately for us we have been very unlucky with Chris Kavanagh this season, many moments.

“Chris was in a game we played away at West Ham where we lost with two clear handballs. We received the apology because of the mistakes. The last game at Leeds in the FA Cup it was him again. And for a game that is the quarter-finals, it’s him again.”

Silva was obviously upset at the fact his side threw away a lead and found themselves behind in just a couple of minutes. As a result of his red card in the cup tie, Fulham will be missing him from the touchline for the next few weeks.

A statement from the FA read (via Manchester Evening News): “Fulham’s Marco Silva has been charged with misconduct for comments that he made in a press conference after the FA Cup tie against Manchester United on Sunday 19 March.

“It’s alleged that his comments constitute improper conduct in that they imply bias and/or question the integrity of the match official, and/or bring the game into disrepute. The manager has until Wednesday 29 March to provide his response.”

Silva’s charge relates to comments he made about decisions in the match and against his side previously by Kavanagh, so the attack had a personal element to it.

Fulham clearly don’t want Kavanagh officiating anymore of their games but it doesn’t work that way. Willian handled the ball on the line and deserved to be dismissed.

Furthermore, Kavanagh was left with no other choice but to send off Aleksandar Mitrovic for his protests.

The Premier League returns this weekend after the last round of internationals of the campaign.

  1. So sad that a manager looks to blame the ref while failing to face up to the truth, you blew it. Fulham where better than United all over the pitch, but then they let one CORRECT decision derail them. If they had remained in control and professional, Willian would have been the only Red card and they might still be in the cup. They could have kept it tight and if they didn’t get a winner they might have won on penalties. Silva should stop looking for someone to blame, realise their failures and correct them. They may never get a better chance to get to Wembley.
