Wesley Sneijder spent years being linked with a move to Manchester United, but in his retirement he has become a mouthpiece in the media – sharing his opinion on the beautiful game like so many other retired footballers do. The Dutchman’s recent comments suggest he can’t believe the Red Devils are trying to sign Wout Weghorst.
Former Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder says he is perplexed by United’s interest in Wout Weghorst. Those only familiar with the 30-year-old’s time in the Premier League will likely to agree, but there is no denying that Weghorst is a player who will fit into Erik ten Hag’s system. Interestingly, this isn’t something Sneijder considered.
A report from the Telegraph claims Besiktas want a third of any loan fee Burnley recieve for Weghorst if they are pushed into granting an exit.
Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, Sneijder said: “I think they’ve seen the trick with the free kick [in the quarter-final against Argentina], so they don’t fall for the England anymore.
“In terms of striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don’t think so. They still have 300 of those in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. This really can’t be true.”
If we can take anything from this, I think it’s clear Sneijder doesn’t rate Weghorst. Not for the level United are trying to reach.
Perhaps he is forgetting that this deal is likely to be just a stop-gap option. Should he go on to prove himself at Old Trafford, Weghorst is a player that gives you something different – even as a Plan B.
