Preview: Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic | League Cup quarter-final

Manchester United will be looking to book a place in the semi-finals of the League Cup when they take on Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Reds go into the game on the back of a 3-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup on Friday night whilst the visitors ran out 2-1 winners over Lincoln City in League One at the weekend.

Erik ten Hag is widely expected to make a number of changes to his starting eleven to face Charlton with new signing Jack Butland, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Elanga all likely to feature.

It’s fair to say its been a positive start to 2023 for Manchester United.

Since returning from the World Cup, the Reds have made it 5 wins from 5 and in doing so has kept United still in the hunt for all four competitions and in facing Charlton Athletic on Tuesday it proved the Reds a great opportunity to progress to the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Charlton have endured a mixed season thus far and currently find themselves sitting just below mid table in 12th place. The visitors recently changed managers just before Christmas appointing Dean Holden and have recently found some form winning each of the last two fixtures and although United will go into this as the heavy favourites its important the Reds don’t take Charlton lightly should they wish to avoid an upset.

The League Cup may not be necessarily be top of everyone’s wish list this season but it arguably provides United their the best chance of winning a trophy this season. United haven’t won a trophy since winning the Europa League back in 2017 and to see United finally lift a trophy after almost six years would be fantastic to see and for Ten Hag would be his first piece of silverware as the new Reds boss.

It wont be easy and Charlton will look to make life difficult for United but despite that we should still have far too much quality for the visitors and in the end I think will win comfortably.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Charlton Athletic
