Former Burnley coach gives assessment of Manchester United target Wout Weghorst

Former Burnley coach Steve Stone has spoken about working with Manchester United target Wout Weghorst.

It is believed that Manchester United are advancing with a deal to sign the Netherlands international on loan for the remainder of the season.

Weghorst is seen as a stop-gap option rather than a centre-forward for the long-term. As fans, we can only hope that Ten Hag gets a top striker in the summer — and maybe keep Weghorst as a Plan B, should he prove himself.

The Dutch striker is currently on loan at Turkish side Besiktas, but that won’t stop United trying to land another player identified by Ten Hag.

Sean Dyche signed Weghorst for Burnley last January but was only able to manage 2 goals in 20 games. That said, he was renowned for his pressing stats during that time – topping charts in the Premier League – and we shouldn’t ignore the fact that Burnley side were relegated last season.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Steve Stone said (via Manchester Evening News): “He is incredibly professional in what he does. He came into our dressing room and set standards right from the start, not that they needed setting, because we had a great work ethic there already.

“But he fitted in really well. We were going through a tough time and he made his mark on the dressing room.

“Technically, he is actually very, very good for someone who is 6ft 6in. He can lead the line in terms of holding the ball up and the technical side comes from his Dutch upbringing.

“What I would say, he wasn’t quick in behind. So when you are trying to spin balls down the channel, it wasn’t his strength, but on the other side of it he does bring other players into play and that’s why he might be looked at for Manchester United.”
