Specsavers poke fun at Manchester United’s expense after Liverpool announce Cody Gakpo transfer

Liverpool announced the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night and the Netherlands star will be available for selection in the New Year.

Manchester United were believed to be huge admirers of the PSV star, but they didn’t have the money required to compete for his signature in January — which gave Liverpool a free run at the forward.

Gakpo joins Liverpool on the back of an impressive World Cup showing for the Netherlands. He scored three goals in five appearances.

The forward moves to the Premier League after making a total of 159 appearances for PSV, scoring 55 times.

Specsavers decided to kick United while we are down by tweeting a reply to Liverpool’s confirmation tweet re: Gakpo’s arrival.

“Close your eyes United fans,” Specsavers tweeted.

It’s a shame to miss out on a quality player like Gakpo, but we are now feeling the harsh effects of having owners like the Glazer family for over 17 years.

No wonder they want to sell up now.

  1. You do wonder about United’s transfer policy. Anthony cost £86m and has done nothing of note; Sancho £76m and not even playing; Maguire an £80m laughing stock and Pogba £96m and let go for free. No wonder they never win anything.
