Manchester United have gained ground on fourth-placed Tottenham by comfortably winning their first game back in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest.

Erik ten Hag was presented with a number of selection headaches ahead of the game, with the side being struck by illness in the build-up.

Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay were both ruled out and Harry Maguire, who missed the win over Burnley last week, was only fit enough to be named on the bench.

That meant Luke Shaw was forced to deputise at centre-back but the 27-year-old was one of several players to impress at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford was the star of United’s attacking play, scoring and assisting in the first half. Casemiro will, however, claim most of the plaudits after yet another masterful performance.

Man United Player Ratings

David de Gea – 7
Only had the odd save to make but got the job done.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8
Diogo Dalot’s absence has given him the chance to resurrect his career and that’s now two top performances.

Raphael Varane – 8
Surprisingly named in the team after reaching the World Cup final with France – Rolls Royce defender.

Luke Shaw – 8
Unfamiliar role at centre-back but never looked out of place. Offered a lot in possession.

Tyrell Malacia – 7
Inconsistent but is settling in well.

Casemiro – 10
Flawless performance – what a player.

Christian Eriksen – 8
A nifty move to engineer the opening goal. Another player who is continuing to show exactly why Ten Hag was desperate to strengthen the midfield.

Antony – 6
Offers a lot of energy but is not quite clicking yet. It will come.

Bruno Fernandes – 8
Keeps the team ticking over, another good outing.

Marcus Rashford – 9
Completely reborn – his tenth goal of the season and his fourth assist.

Anthony Martial – 8
The forward is now averaging a goal or assist every 61 minutes for United this season.
