Manchester United explain makeshift line-up against Nottingham Forest

Manchester United are preparing to face Nottingham Forest in their first game back in the Premier League after the season was paused to accommodate this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

United’s first game back, the 2-0 win over Burnley in the Carabao Cup last week, already showed signs of problems brewing for Erik ten Hag.

Casemiro played at centre-back in that game, with Harry Maguire out due to illness and first-choice pair Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane only finishing their World Cup campaigns days earlier.

In tonight’s game against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag named another makeshift line-up but this time, Casemiro was back in midfield and Luke Shaw is deputising at centre-back. Varane is back in the side just nine days after playing in the World Cup final.

Now, the club have provided an update on the situation through the official Manchester United website, revealing that the team has been struck by illness.

As per the report, Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay have both been ruled out of the game against Steve Cooper’s men, with Harry Maguire still recovering.

Victory over Forest will put United in the driver’s seat to claim a top-four position, with the Reds currently four points behind Tottenham but with two fewer games played.
