Diego Forlan rates Portuguese forward linked with Manchester United transfer

Former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan is a fan of Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.

Manchester United are reportedly among a small list of clubs who are interested in signing Joao Felix in January.

According to The Times, Atletico Madrid will demand €100 million for Felix’s signature after turning away United’s interest earlier this year. It is believed that the player’s relationship with manager Diego Simeone is at breaking point and the club is ready to cash in.

Felix scored three goals in his last two La Liga games before the World Cup. Before this, it looked like he was completely out of the picture at Atleti. You could say things have gone downhill for the Portuguese star since he picked up the prestigious Golden Boy award in 2019.

Now 23-years-old, many feel as though Felix is ready to step things up a level at a different club. Perhaps playing under Simeone, who demands that all players prioritise defensive duties, is having a negative impact on his development and somebody like Erik ten Hag could help him flourish in the Premier League.

Diego Forlan has hinted that Felix would be a good option for United or other Premier League clubs, even drawing comparisons to Philippe Coutinho, who starred for Liverpool prior to his switch to Barcelona.

“Joao Felix is a very good player, he is young and has a lot of quality,” Forlan told reporters, as per the Express. “[Atletico Madrid] paid a lot of money for him and he has not been playing as expected, but he is still very young.

“There are reports coming out about the possibility of him leaving Atletico and, if he leaves, he could even increase his performance. I believe in that. It happens a lot. It happened, for example, with Philippe Coutinho, who played very little at Inter and when he went to Liverpool he improved a lot.”

United are expected to sign a forward in January after terminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract, however, I don’t think Ten Hag will have €100m to spend midseason. Not when the Glazers are in the process of trying to sell the club.

Let us know in the comments section if you think Felix would be a good signing for United? Either way, I’m happy to trust Ten Hag’s judgement on the matter.
