Leeds United takeover in doubt after announcements from Glazers and FSG

There was speculation about the San Francisco 49ers taking over Leeds United in the summer, but apparently such a move has been thrown into doubt since the Glazer family and Fenway Sports Group decided to put their Premier League clubs up for sale.

Unless you have been asleep under a rock, you will know that Manchester United and Liverpool are both up for sale. FSG announced their plans first but the Glazers didn’t take long to make similar steps with a statement inviting investment.

The 49ers had made their intentions clear regarding Leeds United before that after securing funding to take full ownership from Andrea Radrizzani in the summer of 2023.

LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross claims that the situation at Leeds is still “one to watch”.

Replying to a question during a Q&A, Cross wrote: “It is interesting what’s gone on in the States with Liverpool and Man United’s owners.

“There are clearly reasons behind their decisions and you wonder if they affect 49ers in the same way. There has been nothing to suggest a changing of circumstances in that regard, but it’s one to watch in this void of information of progress we have seen from San Francisco for a long time.”

It is unprecedented to have both United and Liverpool up for sale at the same time and that will definitely have a negative impact on Leeds – in terms of the type of investors they can attract.

This could make the 49ers group think twice about Leeds.
