Tech reporter debunks claims Apple wants to buy Manchester United

Apple have been drawn into the discussion about the potential sale of Manchester United but it doesn’t sound like their interest is genuine or worth getting excited over.

The Daily Star published a report on Thursday stating that technology giants Apple had an interest in buying Manchester United for £5.8 billion.

United has been owned by the Glazer family since 2005 but the club announced on Tuesday that its board will explore strategic alternatives, including a sale of the club.

However, Mac Rumours, a website that covers Apple closely, claims reports of interest are rubbish.

Senior reporter Joe Rossignol has stressed that Apple is not planning to buy the club.

The report states: “While it has no plans to buy Manchester United, Apple has been pushing into sports content. The company partnered with the MLB to air a weekly ‘Friday Night Baseball’ doubleheader on Apple TV+ during the 2022 regular season, and it will be the exclusive provider of MLS games for the next 10 years. Apple is reportedly also considered a frontrunner for streaming rights to the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package starting next season.”

Unfortunately, the Glazer announcement had led to lots of lazy journalism — all for the sake of clickbait — but we will try our best to separate the facts from the crap in the coming weeks or months (however long it takes for the Glazer family to sell Manchester United).

Apple does not strike me as the type of company that would be interested in buying United, even if they have the money to do it at the click of a finger. The only company I recall them buying was Beats to boost headphone sales.

Old Trafford won’t be becoming iTrafford anytime soon.
