Manchester United leading the race to sign FC Porto’s Diogo Costa

Reports suggest Manchester United are leading the race for FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The Portuguese shot stopper, 23, has enjoyed an impressive start to the season for Porto.

It helps that he possesses the ball-playing ability to play out from the back and is willing to come off his line when necessary. We think these are the sort of attributes Erik ten Hag will be considering when the time comes to sign a new goalkeeper.

David de Gea has been subject to criticism in recent years for not coming off his line or being comfortable with the ball at his feet. The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season and that has resulted in United being linked with several keepers.

We should note how De Gea showed some signs of improvement in his most recent performances against Everton and Omonia, but you still won’t see me describe him as a sweeper keeper.

According to Diario de Noticias (H/t Sport Witness), Manchester United are leading the race to sign Costa.

There is a belief that he could become the most expensive transfer in Porto’s history which should come as no surprise after seeing him become the only goalie in Champions League history to save a penalty, provide an assist and keep a clean sheet in the same game.

Stretty News verdict – Costa is the perfect replacement for De Gea

We all want Manchester United back at the top again, right? Then it’s about finding a keeper who perfectly fits the vision of the manager. A benchmark modern goalkeeper.

Making saves is important as De Gea has shown for years, but at the top level, the role has developed. A keeper is now expected to be a conductor to the attacking orchestra.

The 11th outfield player almost.
