State of play as Man United boost hopes of Europa League advancement

Manchester United have taken a big step towards qualifying for the next round of Europa League fixtures after they came back from behind to beat Omonia in Cyprus.

Marcus Rashford was the star of the show on the night, with the 24-year-old playing a part in all three goals after he was introduced after half-time.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag admitted that he was not entirely happy with the first half, arguing he wanted to inject more runs and movement in the second half.

Whatever his instructions were, they were certainly executed successfully as United claimed another three points to add to their tally, which now stands at six points.

So what’s the state of play in United’s group and how did the other teams fare this week? We take a look.

United now sit second in the group but remain three points behind Real Sociedad, who are currently favourites to win the group after winning at Old Trafford. FC Sheriff are in third place on three points, whilst Omonia remain bottom after losing all of their games.

Sociedad’s 100% record is intact after comfortably winning against FC Sheriff and it’s now looking like United’s visit to the Spanish side could decide the group.

As opposed to the last time United competed in the Europa League group stages, there’s now a major difference between finishing first and second in your group.

Ahead of last season, it was decided that only first-placed teams would qualify for the round of 16 whilst second-placed teams will play in the round of 32. Second-placed Europa League teams will face teams that drop down from their Champions League groups.

United will, however, be confident of finishing first in the group if they manage to get a result against Sociedad.
