Arsenal make improved £34m offer for United target Lisandro Martinez

Arsenal have made an improved offer to sign Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine centre-back, who can also play in midfield, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

A potential switch could see him reunite with Erik ten Hag, although it sounds like we’ve got competition from another Premier League club.

According to the Daily Mail, Martinez is Arsenal’s first-choice target for their defence while Ajax are demanding £43m for the 24-year-old. The Gunners have made a £34m bid which is still short of the Dutch club’s asking price.

It seems like are waiting (patiently) to complete a deal for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong before they make further additions to the squad. For whatever reason, it’s made this transfer window a frustrating one to cover as a United-supporting journalist.

There’s no way we should be approaching July without having made a single signing to help the new manager on his journey at the club. It’s madness.

With Arsenal making bids for Martinez, we will soon see if United are interested enough in the player to entertain a bidding war. Ten Hag’s former employees would love nothing more than that.

If Martinez has two bids on the table and is left with a decision to make, does he really want to join a side managed by someone who has failed on multiple occasions to get into the top four?

I reckon he would rather join Ten Hag at United.

  1. Of course someone less biased might suggest he’d be choosing between a young improving Arsenal team or an ageing United team in decline!
