Manchester United have triggered a one-year extension in Tahith Chong’s contract, according to reports.

The Manchester Eveing News claims that United have taken up the option of an additional year to tie the Dutch winger to the club until 2023. It makes perfect sense because the 22-year-old was approaching the final months of his contract and he’s currently on loan at Birmingham City, after returning from a long time out with injury.

Although Chong’s loan spell at Birmingham was disrupted by a four-month lay-off, the United academy graduate has made a total of 16 starts, scoring once having assisted two goals.

It sounds like Chong will get a chance to impress on the pre-season tour this summer, with United announcing trips to Thailand and Australia earlier this week.

I hope for Chong’s sake that he finds his rhythm in the Championship before the end of the season. Birmingham need a few wins in order to completely rule out the possibility of relegation and it would be good to see a United loanee play a starring role.

It will be interesting to see if Chong goes out on loan again next season. At 22, you’d think it’s now or never for him at United.
