Ralf Rangnick held exit talks with Anthony Martial

Ralf Rangnick has held discussions with Anthony Martial over his future.

The Frenchman has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford in recent times, and Rangnick was happy to tell the media about their discussions now that the player wants to leave Manchester United.

It’s bound to bring mixed feelings to Reds, who thought Martial had a bright future after bursting onto the scene in his debut against Liverpool, though he’s suffered due to inconsistency.

Not just for Manchester United, but France too.

Martial’s agent has already said that his client is looking for a move in January, but Rangnick only got to speak to the player himself about his future on Wednesday.

Discussing Martial’s current situation, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Rangnick told reporters: “Yes, we spoke I think it was yesterday [Wednesday], we spoke at length. He explained to me he’s been at Manchester United now for the last seven years and he feels it’s the right time for a change, to go somewhere else.

“I think in a way this is understandable, I could follow his thoughts but on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club. We have Covid times, we have three competitions in which we still have high ambitions and want to be as successful as we can be.

“I told him listen, as long as there is no club showing interest in him, and it should not only be in the interest of the player it should also be in the interest of the club.

“So far, as far as I know, there has been no offer from any other club and as long as this is the case he will stay.”

The problem for Martial is that we still don’t know his best position on the pitch. Is it on the left, where he likes to cut in, or is it as a centre-forward?

Martial came to United from AS Monaco as a hugely talented prospect. It’s not helped that he has been asked to play several different roles because he never got to nail down one position in the team.

Another big problem is how Martial has never really scored the volume of goals required to be a regular number 9 for a club like United.
