Man Utd’s appetite to sack Solskjaer growing as manager walks on thin ice

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future as Manchester United manager is quickly coming under increasing scrutiny as the Norwegian is currently overseeing his side’s worst run of form this calendar year.

Manchester United have recorded just one win from their last six Premier League games, with the 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur last month being the only occasion three points were recorded.

Earlier this week, there were reports claiming Manchester United are ‘increasingly confident’ of landing Brendan Rodgers as Solskjaer’s replacement should the Old Trafford hierarchy decide to axe the manager.

Now, reports claim that Manchester United’s appetite to sack Solskjaer has grown amid humiliating performances and that the 48-year-old risks losing his job if performances continue on this negative trend.

That’s according to Football Insider, who say that Solskjaer will be sacked by the club if he does not immediately turn things around in the matches following this week’s international break.

Solskjaer will be in charge for next week’s game at Watford but as per the report, there is a growing appetite among the decision-makers at Manchester United to lay the gauntlet down on Solskjaer.

In quite a descriptive detail, Football Insider reveal that Manchester United were bemused by Solskjaer’s decision to play with a three-at-the-back formation against Manchester City, despite Pep Guardiola fielding a team without a recognised striker.

SN’s verdict on Solskjaer’s future and the report from Football Insider…
Sadly, the latest developments won’t come as a surprise to Manchester United fans following the Reds’ disastrous form on the pitch. Last season, United were a much-improved side from the one that finished third in the 2019/20 season but Solskjaer has failed to build on that this season.

For many, the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool was the tipping point and large sections of the club’s supporters were surprised to see him keep his job after that dismal loss.

A somewhat successful recovery attempt was made with a win against Tottenham and a good result at Atalanta but the comprehensive 2-0 loss to Manchester City has piled the pressure back on Solskjaer.

When Jose Mourinho was sacked in 2018, the club’s unwillingness to act early meant that the 2018/19 season was finished before it had even started and the club cannot risk that happening again.

An extension to the poor form United are currently on could mean that Champions League qualification is out of reach before the turn of the year, which would be disastrous for the club.

As per the update from Football Insider, it would appear that Solskjaer is walking on thin ice at the moment. Following the game at Watford next week, a trip to Villarreal awaits Solskjaer’s side. The positive result at Atalanta has offered the Norwegian some breathing space but defeat in Spain could be catastrophic for his Champions League hopes.
