Raphael Varane singles out ‘leader’ at Man Utd with ‘positive energy’

Going into this summer, Raphael Varane was very much a fantasy signing for many Manchester United supporters. The 28-year-old fit the bill completely but a move was deemed unrealistic.

As things turned out, all parties were keen to complete a transfer and the four-time Champions League winner joined the club last month.

Although he has made just two appearances in the Premier League so far, the Frenchman has impressed and stats suggest he is already making a difference at Old Trafford.

Varane’s relationship with Paul Pogba is well-documented and the defender has now revealed that he spoke to the midfielder ahead of his transfer to United, praising him as a person with ‘positive energy’.

“Paul spoke to me about the club, about the atmosphere, about the expectations,” Varane told Sky Sports. “Of course, he is a great player. But he also has very good, positive energy. He is a leader for the group. I’ve known him for a very long time so I’m happy to play with him.”

Varane signed a long-term contract at the club but questions remain over Pogba’s future at United, with his agent recently opening up an avenue for him to return to Juventus.

The France international has less than one year remaining on the contract he signed in 2016 and is free to speak with foreign clubs in January.
