From Spain: Man Utd tried to sign Atletico Madrid star ‘until the last minute’

Manchester United will be happy with most of their business this summer. It was a successful summer transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer filling at least two positions in dire need of strengthening.

Jadon Sancho, who was a target in 2020 but a move for the 21-year-old failed then, finally joined the club after extensive negotiations with Borussia Dortmund. Raphael Varane was also earmarked as Solskjaer’s first-choice target in defence and the 28-year-old made his debut last week.

The transfer window took an unexpected turn in its final week when Cristiano Ronaldo joined but Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier was always in the peripheral.

The right-back was a target for the club this summer and according to Spanish outlet AS, via Sport Witness, Manchester United tried to bring the former Tottenham star to Old Trafford ‘until the last minute’ in the window.

Instead, Trippier ended up staying at Atletico Madrid but United could be tempted to try again in January when the player is another six months down on his contract in Spain.
