Paul Merson credits Manchester United for making signing of the summer

Former Arsenal star turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson thinks highly of the latest signing made by Manchester United as Raphael Varane arrives from Real Madrid.

Varane, 28, has won 19 trophies throughout his career and he was unveiled in front of a packed Old Trafford on Saturday ahead of United’s Premier League opener against Leeds United.

The World Cup-winner signed a contract at the club which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least the simmer of 2025 and he could make his Premier League debut away to Southampton next Sunday.

Merson has been impressed by United’s transfer business this summer and thinks the signing of Varane turns the team into title contenders.

Writing in his column for The Daily Star, Merson said: “Raphael Varane will turn Manchester United into title contenders – he’s the signing of the summer in the Premier League. I think it’s as tight as it’s ever been this season and there’s four teams who could win the league.

“United weren’t one of them but Varane changes that. I think that’s a major signing.

“With all the class and experience he brings with him from Real Madrid, I think he’s going to have a massive impact.”

Varane is a real star, one of the best defenders in the world and it’s a clear signal of intent from the club.

Twelve months ago, we questioned whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would ever get the backing to deliver what every fan wants. The Premier League.

It certainly feels like we’re getting closer but the team still lacks a defensive midfielder.
