Manchester United were back in action at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, having played the first two pre-season games at Pride Park and Loftus Road.
United won their first game as goals from Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri were enough to see off a decimated Derby side, whilst defeat against Queens Park Rangers raised question marks over the fitness of some of the players.
No such questions will be asked after the encounter with Brentford, which proved to be an excellent showing of quality football. Solskjaer’s side was vibrant and early pressure was rewarded as Anthony Elanga opened the scoring.
Brentford equalised moments after with a sumptuous strike but the next goal would steal all the headlines. Jesse Lingard’s shot was parried into Andreas Pereira’s path, who proceeded to score a breathtaking volley from 25-yards out, cannoning off the crossbar and in.
“That hit from Andreas was out of this world,” Solskjaer told MUTV. “I was thinking ‘please take a touch’, but he’s skilful, Andreas has got technique. What a hit.”
The Norwegian boss also confirmed that United’s international players, most of whom are still on holiday, are all due back on Monday.
“Everyone is due in Monday for training,” he told Laurie Whitwell. “We’ll see what fitness levels they are at. It’s down to them what they have done during this, I can’t just throw them in if they are not fit enough.”
