With Jadon Sancho soon to be added to the Manchester United squad, it looks like the club has turned their attention to bolstering Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence.
Signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid would be a big boost in strengthening the side for a title challenge next season. Harry Maguire would finally have a world-class defensive partner to play alongside rather than Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly – it’s a surprise that Axel Tuanzebe has been unable to stake a claim, which is massively down to injuries.
Fabrizio Romano, who appeared on the Strettycast this week, has tweeted an update on United’s pursuit of Varane – stating that it won’t be a quick deal with Real Madrid.
On top of that, no bid has been made but Romano adds personal terms with the player won’t be an issue. The French defender wants to try something new and he could move to the Premier League – something he was close to doing 10-years, prior to his move to the Bernabeu.
Varane is on top of United’s list for centre-backs and has been for months.
The France international’s contract expires next summer, and Los Blancos won’t want to lose a World Cup winner on a free.
Check out Romano’s update below:
Manchester United are in contact with Real Madrid for Varane. No official bid yet – won’t be a “quick” deal. 🔴 #MUFC
Personal terms won’t be an issue – Real still hope to convince Varane to stay, but he wants to try something new. He’s on top of #MUFC list as CB since months.

Fans have their say
Raphael Varane instantly rejected a new contract with 13 time European Champions when he heard the Kings of England are interested.
Never question our pull.
