Manchester United close to signing Raphael Varane – report

Manchester United are reportedly close to finalizing a deal to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to fix the problems in defence if his team are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The Reds have been linked with the France international for a long time – dating back to his move to Real Madrid 10-years ago – but he snubbed the chance to link-up with his idol Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

Varane has won everything at Real Madrid and it would be a good time, at 28, to open a new chapter and experience a different league.

It goes without saying that he would be a huge upgrade on the likes of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, but ESPN claim a deal is edging closer so that Harry Maguire may have a much better partner next season.

United are said to be receiving encouragement to negotiate the deal, as per the report, with Real Madrid seemingly opted to sell Varane before his contract expires next year.

They’ve already lost Sergio Ramos this summer and I would be delighted to see the club sign Varane.

And even if we are to miss out, surely there are better options than Ramos at this stage of his career?
