Manchester United have reportedly begun talks with midfielder Juan Mata over a possible contract extension.

That’s according to the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, who claims the Red Devils are keen to retain the services of their experienced Spaniard.

Mata, 33, joined United in 2014 following a £40.2m move from domestic rivals Chelsea.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, the Spanish midfielder has grown to become a bit of a fan-favourite.

Appreciated off the field for his genuine character, Mata is also often praised for his experienced nature on it.

Having featured in 273 matches, in all competitions over the last seven years, the 33-year-old attacking midfielder has directly contributed to an impressive 98 goals.

However, as the most recent 2020-21 season drew to a close and with his contract set to expire at the end of June, there were suggestions the midfielder could depart for free.

Well now, according to McGrath, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to retain Mata and have opened talks over the possibility of extending his Old Trafford stay until at least 2022.
