Manchester United fans have given mixed reactions to the news that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to sign a new contract as manager.
According to ESPN, United are committing to extending Solskjaer’s current deal regardless of whether he ends the club’s four-year trophy drought this season.
United’s only realistic chance left of winning a trophy is the Europa League, after the Reds were knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester and sit 14 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City in the Premier League.
Solskjaer’s side have been drawn against Granada in the Europa League quarter-finals and will face Ajax or Roma if they overcome the eighth-placed La Liga team.
But the outcome of the European competition won’t directly impact Solskjaer’s future as ESPN’s report notes that the club are happy with the progression they are seeing under the Norwegian boss.
Solskjaer approaches the final year of his three-year deal this summer but it is added that both parties are relaxed and planning for the long-term future.
United are second in the league table and are poised to finish in the top-four for a second consecutive season.
But some fans cannot see why a decision should be rushed and believe United managers should ultimately be defined by silverware.
United fans on social media have reacted to the news:
Look even if we don't win the Europa League this season even tho I think we will I'll still back Solskjaer. 🔴

Set to be the only manager post SAF to manage back to back top 4 finishes.
“We’re Man Utd, we’re about winning the league not top 4”
How do you think you get to that level? Magic? It’s about sustained improvement year on year to get back to the top. Ole is doing that.

I’d like to see him sign before the season’s end. Send a message to agents and players that United are committed to a project for the first time since the late eighties.

New deal for Solskjaer. Will earn him £30m over course of contract. Incentives as well. 😬#MUFC

Don't see the rush with this one. Over 12 months left to run on current deal, Solskjaer unlikely to have his head turned by another club in the meantime. Next season is make or break. New contract should only come this year if United win Europa League. If not, hold off #mufc https://t.co/LN8p6KzkAP

Now that Solskjaer has agreed a new £30 Million – 3 year contract. It's our duty as fans to back the Manager. 👊🏽🔴 pic.twitter.com/uPe76pFtEU

For me it’s easy, you don’t give Ole Gunner Solskjaer a new contract until we see what happens next season.
A saying springs to mind.. “Rushing time is just as bad as wasting it”💭
Manchester United don’t need to pull the trigger yet and should assess at Christmas.#MUFC 🔴 pic.twitter.com/BF4hTVzbSA
