Exclusive: Man United’s Teden Mengi loan move depends on contract talks

Manchester United’s Teden Mengi is wanted by several clubs on-loan and even has offers from abroad, however, with ongoing contract talks, the youngster’s short-term future is yet to be decided.

Mengi, 18, has spent his entire career with United after joining their youth academy when he was just a young boy.

After climbing his way through the club’s youth ranks, the talented defender went on to make his senior first-team debut during a Europa League tie last year.

However, after struggling to retain his place in the Red Devils’ first-team plans, Mengi has since found himself back with the club’s under-23s.

Stretty News understands that despite Mengi’s failure to break back into his side’s senior side, United view him as an integral part of their future and have consequently opened contract talks.

It has been revealed to us that despite United continuing in their efforts to get the youngster to commit his long-term future to the club, the player and the club are still someway from agreeing terms.

It was recently reported that Mengi is a loan target for several clubs and it has been confirmed to us that the 18-year-old is a wanted man by several clubs in the Championship as well as abroad.

However, United’s willingness to allow their defensive starlet to depart on a short-term loan strongly depends on successful contract negotiations.

The Red Devils’ decision makers are reluctant to allow Mengi to showcase his talent elsewhere if he does not agree to extend his deal beyond the summer of 2022.

The club have major concerns that should Mengi impress elsewhere and then return with just 12-months left on his deal, it will prompt potential suitors to take advantage of the situation.

We understand that the player’s preference is to secure a loan move as he remains keen to secure first-team football.

However, with the window’s deadline fast approaching, it is entirely possible that Mengi will be forced to remain in Manchester should he fail to agree a new deal before the end of the month.
