Man Utd end interest in RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano despite summer release clause

Manchester United have reportedly ended their pursuit of highly-rated RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s requires an elite central defender to accelerate his rebuild at Old Trafford and many supporters had identified France international Upamecano as the ideal target.

United have been tentatively linked with the 22-year-old for over a year, but it appears that any interest has now cooled.

The Athletic report that Upamecano is keen on sealing an exit from Leipzig for a leading European club in the near future.

And the centre-back’s extremely attractive £38m release clause activates at the end of the season.

The Athletic add that Upamecano has been considered at length by United, but the club have now made it clear they will not progress with a move for the player.

Instead, Leipzig’s Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich are favourites for Upamecano’s signature and the Athletic suggest his preference is a move to the European Champions.

The reason behind United’s decision to drop interest in Upamecano remains unclear, but the youngster was poor in United’s 5-0 victory over Leipzig in the Champions League group stages in October.

Upamecano was suspended for the return fixture where the Reds crashed out of the competition with a 3-2 defeat at the Red Bull Arena.

Meanwhile, the Manchester Evening News report that Brighton’s Ben White and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane are among the other defensive options being considered for a possible transfer in 2021.
