Manchester United target World Cup-winning centre back at Real Madrid

Manchester United are reportedly planning a move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane next summer.

While there was a genuine need for a centre-back signing in the transfer market, one never arrived and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be tasked with fixing a defensive mess which was clear to see in the 6-1 humiliation against Tottenham Hotspur.

United signed Alex Telles from FC Porto to provide competition for Luke Shaw, though. And the club failed yet again to offload Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones.

According to Mundo Deportivo in Spain, United will turn to Real Madrid star Varane in order to solve their defensive issues. The France international is contracted to Madrid until 2020 and it’s gone quiet on a renewal.

The report suggests United are trying to get the defender in a cut-price deal next summer.

Varane would be a top signing but I refuse to get excited about it just yet.

He could easily use United in the media to get a better deal at Madrid — as we’ve seen with other players in the past, such as Varane’s team-mate Sergio Ramos.

It seems too good to be true.
