Roma make new €15m bid for Manchester United’s Chris Smalling

AS Roma have reportedly launched a new offer for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

The 30-year-old is keen to return to Italy after spending a season-long loan at Roma last term.

Italian journalist Di Marzio claims an improved offer of €15m has come from the Serie A club for Smalling.

Smalling’s future remains uncertain and there’s no guarantee United will accept the reported offer.

Given United’s hardline stance on the defender this summer, welcoming his sale but only for the right price, I wouldn’t be surprised if this offer was rejected unless the bonuses are worthy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not signed a centre-back this summer and I don’t think United will budge on Smalling until Roma cough up what his present club wants.

United take on Spurs layer today and all eyes will be on Solskjaer’s selection at the back. Will the Norwegian start Eric Bailly ahead of Victor Lindelof?

The Ivorian was superb again during the week as United knocked Brighton out of the League Cup — beating Graham Potter’s side for the second time in five days.

Whatever decision he makes today, I’m sure he would have wanted a centre-back this summer and hasn’t got one.
