According to a report in the Sun, United believe they are close to securing a £76m move for the promising 19-year-old forward, who would be loaned back out to his Austrian club until the end of the season.
However, the context behind the image has been explained by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
The reporter says that the photo was taken in an event in his hometown of Bryne, commending the photographer for creating the social media storm.
Haaland then posted numerous photos on his social media of him signing other shirts, albeit in a different setting to the one in which he signed the United jersey.
