Arsene Wenger gives verdict on Man Utd and names team to challenge Man City and Liverpool

Former boss Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal are the only team capable of challenging Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.

Champions City and close runners-up Liverpool finished a staggering 25 points ahead of their nearest challengers, with Chelsea finishing in third position on 72 points last time out.

The table is already taking a similar shape to last season, with United already falling adrift of leaders City and Liverpool just five games in to the current campaign.

There is a certain inevitability with Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides at the moment and it’s difficult to see where they will drop points, as painful as it is for a Unites fan to say.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a huge rebuilding process and must be given time and resources if the Reds are to to compete again domestically in the coming years.

For now, however, Wenger believes his former side could be the nearest competitors this time out.

“Maybe the team who has the potential is Arsenal who could be the closest,” Wenger told beIN Sports USA.

“Chelsea looks a bit young; not enough mature up front, not enough mature at the back.

“Man United hasn’t found certainty where you could say today they can fight for the championship,”

While we expect yet another tough season, we don’t expect Arsenal to mount anything of a title challenge despite an encouraging transfer window for Unai Emery.

The Gunners’  frailties remain apparent and they won’t be able to compete without strengthening in central defence.

United should still be confident they can finish ahead of Arsenal this season, but do not have the attacking fire-power that the North London club boast.
