Man Utd would need to pay €115m to sign 22-year-old Benfica star

Manchester United will now have to pay a huge €115m to sign Benfica defender Ruben Dias, according to reports.

That’s the latest from Portuguese publication Correio de Manha, who claim Dias is set to sign a contract extension with a new massive release clause.

Dias is seen as one of the most talented young defenders across Europe at the moment, and impressed in his Portugal national side’s victory at the recent inaugural Nations League.

The central defender’s original contract was said to be around the €66m mark (Record as translated by Sport Witness), which would have been a very reasonable price for United to sign one of Europe’s brightest talents.

But it now appears that the 22-year-old’s cost has almost doubled, all but ending any talk of a move for the defender.

It may not be Dias, but United must sign an established centre-back this summer in what is a key area of weakness. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs new options in the centre of defence as he can not keep relying on the likes of Phil Jones, and it is unclear whether Axel Tuanzebe will get the chance to impress in the first-team.
