Manchester United chiefs have gone to the effort of squashing the club’s links with Gianluigi Donnarumma after he confirmed he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Ever since the Champions League-winning shot-stopper reached a stalemate in his contract talks with PSG, it was claimed that United were among his suitors sizing up a swoop before deadline day.

Some reports even went as far as claiming Donnarumma was open to making the switch to Old Trafford. While that may well be the case from his perspective, INEOS have no desire to sanction his arrival.

Reluctant to allow the 26-year-old to leave as a free agent when his terms expire next summer, PSG omitted Donnarumma from Luis Enrique’s squad for their Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening in an attempt to publicly freeze him out of their plans.

The Ligue 1 giants also signed coveted goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille last week, prompting speculation that he would pose as a direct replacement for the current No.1 at the Parc des Princes.

Then, last night, Donnarumma took to social media to express his grievances over his exile whilst setting in stone that he’d be on the move from Paris before the window closes. In the meantime, Manchester City registered their interest in the Italian captain – despite activating James Trafford’s buy-back option back in July.

Donnarumma a no-go for United

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone subsequently revealed late last night that there had been ‘strong push back from Old Trafford against links with Donnarumma’, before adding that a ‘keeper is ‘not a priority’ for the side this transfer window.

It means Ruben Amorim will be navigating 2025/2026 with both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir as his primary options between the sticks, which may not fill fans with too much confidence after their displays last season.

  1. Onana MUST go & be replaced, I’m sure our defenders have no faith in him just like us supporters, if our defence have no trust in him, this will be a nightmare, we MUST get a quality goal keeper in, United have once again screwed up not getting Donnarumma or Martinez, you CAN’T win things if you don’t have a reliable goal keeper & Onana is NOT a reliable goal keeper & NEEDS to go, otherwise it will be the same as last season & he will LOSE us valuable points and matches, & he seriously cost us bad last season.
