Manchester United and Andre Onana are reportedly set to extend their collaboration for at least another season.

The Cameroonian has been plying his trade at Old Trafford since making the £47.5m move from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.

The 29-year-old had arrived with much fanfare after an exceptional campaign in Italy, but he failed to replicate his form on English soil.

The former Ajax goalkeeper developped a knack for committing howlers, which have often cost the club dearly.

Retired Italian goalkeeper Alberto Fontana went on to label Onana as an ‘unpopular’ figure in the dressing room due to his ill-advised flamboyant style.

Andre Onana has struggled to convince after two years at Man Utd

Therefore, the Man Utd supporters have been hoping for the arrival of a new custodian who would offer a safe pair of hands between the posts.

The club has been linked with a plethora of potential candidates for the role, including Burnley’s James Trafford, Torino’s Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi.

However, The Athletic now tips Onana to linger at Carrington. This decision has been made following a summit between the player’s agents and Man Utd officials that ensued last week.

Man United set to confirm Onana

As the source explains, United could still enter the market for a new shot-stopper, but that would be a backup who can offer Onana some competition. In other words, this potential new signing would replace Altay Bayindir who never managed to threaten the Cameroonian’s status as No.1, whether under the guidance of Erik ten Hag or Ruben Amorim.

Many MUFC fans will be disappointed by this news, as they believe signing an upgrade for Onana is of paramount importance in order to avoid leaking silly goals.

The former Ajax man is tied to the Red Devils with a contract valid until June 2028 that includes an option for another year. This season, he registered 11 clean sheets in 50 appearances, while shipping in 65 goals.
