The Athletic: UCL finalists hold ‘concrete interest’ in Erik ten Hag signing, he’s made his stance clear

After an early-window acquisition of Matheus Cunha, Manchester United chiefs are mulling over the outgoings they can sanction to facilitate further spending.

They remain locked in talks over a potential deal for Bryan Mbeumo after he gave priority to an Old Trafford move amidst interest from Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. However, United’s opening proposal of £45 million plus £10m in add-ons fell below Brentford’s valuation, meaning there’s work to be done before the prospective transfer is green-lit.

A lack of approaches in the first stage of the transfer window has prevented any sales from being made just yet, and one player who could well bring in a healthy cash injection has made it clear he has no desire to leave.

Inter Milan set sights on Rasmus Hojlund coup

Indeed, The Athletic confirmed today that Inter Milan have established ‘concrete interest’ in Rasmus Hojlund in a bid to revitalise their attacking contingent following their Champions League final humiliation.

Reports have suggested the Dane had privately opened the door to the prospect of returning to Serie A, where he spent one season with Atalanta, but his public admission on international duty has played down speculation on his future.

After a lacklustre display in Denmark’s win over Northern Ireland, Hojlund told reporters: “I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I’m just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season.”

Hojlund could fall in the pecking order if a new forward arrives

One factor that may change his mind is if United bring in a prolific goalscorer in the coming weeks.

The 22-year-old had grown accustomed to being the side’s starting No.9 last term, but his performances have not warranted a permanent spot in Ruben Amorim’s starting XI, and the club remain actively scouring the market for a suitable centre-forward to bolster the boss’ ranks.

Viktor Gyokeres, who made 68 appearances under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and returned 66 goals, is thought to be an option, though United’s lack of Champions League football in 2025/2026 has slightly scuppered their chances of getting a deal over the line.

  1. If Hojlund is seriously expecting to stay at Man Utd, then someone needs to explain the facts of life to him … including using the example of Sancho … to make sure he doesn’t end up being “that guy”. Hojlund needs to take any semi-sensible opportunity to move to another league.

    1. I think for Hojlund, it’s more about negotiation for his package and, maybe, working with United to turn loan offer into the outright buy.
