“He’s not good enough” – Scholes agrees with Jamie Carragher’s damning assessment of Man Utd star

Paul Scholes doesn’t see Manchester United winning the Premier League with their current defensive bunch, including Lisando Martinez.

The Red Devils have been leaking goals at the back since the start of the season. Not even the switch to the three-man backline that accompanied Ruben Amorim’s arrival could do the trick.

Moreover, the defensive department took a major hit as Martinez suffered an ACL injury during the club’s losing effort to Crystal Palace 10 days ago. Nevertheless, Scholes argued that the Argentine doesn’t have what it takes to help the Red Devils clinch the Premier League title.

“He [Martinez] is not good enough to win a Premier League with,” said Scholes during this appearance on The Overlap Fan Debate.

Jamie Carragher, who was hosting the episode, remained quiet on this particular instance, perhaps he didn’t feel the need to add much, as Scholes’ comment certainly resonates with his own assessment of the 2022 World Cup winner.

The Liverpool legend considers Lisandro too small for a centre-back, and believes he would be better off as a full-back.

Nevertheless, the Argentine isn’t the only Man Utd defender who failed to impress Scholes. The iconic midfielder is also unconvinced by Matthijs de Ligt, as he didn’t like how many clubs he has already changed his his relatively young career, while also pointing out Leny Yoro’s poor showing against Southampton.

“I haven’t liked what I’ve seen so far [from Yoro]. Did you see the Southampton game? But he’s one centre-half I Would keep, but I’d bring in another two.”

“I’m talking about getting a team to win the Premier League. Are you gonna win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro?

“De Ligt’s age and amount of clubs already concerns me. He was brilliant at Ajax but he seems to get worse as he’s got over. Bayern Munich and Juventus let him go for some reason.”

  1. Who else is starting to have doubts about our new manager? I mean, my instinct is to remain loyal, but I don’t see any progress. No signs to indicate improvement but lots to demonstrate the manager is unable to communicate what he wants from the players.

  2. You are a legend Scholes but I think its time you shut up and stopped slating the team every chance you get, imagine slating Yoro already

  3. I do think Scholes is right about some of the players not being good enough for United. We need to address this on the summer window, but I just can’t see Ineos backing Amorim with 7 players coming in. He may have to look at players ready to come through from our Academy and Under 21s.
We do have a list of players who have the ability and should be brought on tour this summer.
A mixture of these players with some experienced players that Amorim feels can play the system he wants to play and Ineos can get them in here , will have the time to train together on tour. Then he can add to the squad over the next few windows.
So if say, we can bring in 4 players CB,CM, CF, through the spine, and a RWB. Then add some of our youngsters who are ready, we can at least challenge for honours next season.
