Manchester United have announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team.

The move is complete but is subject to work visa requirements and he will join until June 2027, with the option of a further year. It comes after the Portuguese club confirmed United had contacted them about their manager.

Since then, it has felt inevitable that Amorim would move to Old Trafford.

Amorim will remain in charge of Sporting Lisbon until he joins United on Monday 11 November to start work during the next international break.

This is an exciting coup for United as Amorim is rated as one of the best young coaches in Europe. He won two Primeira Liga titles, including their first title in 19 years.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in charge as interim manager until Amorim’s arrival, after getting off to a winning start against Leicester City on Wednesday night. United beat the Foxes 5-2 with a strong performance to leave the Old Trafford faithful entertained.

The win put United into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, so Amorim has a lot to look forward to when he eventually leaves Sporting.

Sporting have won all nine games so far this season and he leaves a side competing in the Champions League.

Amorim is not expected to give his first interview as United manager until he arrives at the club.

His first Premier League game in charge will be on 24 November, when United face Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Amorim did an internship under Jose Mourinho when he was United manager.

It has been reported in Portugal that Amorim has spoken to Mourinho about taking charge at Old Trafford, with him now announced as Ten Hag’s successor.

Mourinhio’s Fenerbahce drew with United in the Europa League this season but there won’t be a repeat of the fixture due to the competition’s new format.

United fans will be happy with the news because we’ve got a coach with many strengths that Ten Hag didn’t have. So, in that sense, it’s a step forward from INEOS and they finally have their own man to hold accountable for results.

MUST statement

Manchester United Supporters’ Trust has issued a statement on the Amorim news.

“United fans will be pleased the club has acted quickly to appoint one of Europe’s best regarded young coaches.

“Needless to say, every Red will offer him the warmest of welcomes and wish him to every success.

“We are under no illusion about the scale of his challenge and the time it will take to turn the Club around. He should be backed by the Club in every possible way, including in the transfer market.

“Bem-vindo Ruben!”
