‘Beyond belief’: Ratcliffe is now ruing ‘dreadful’ summer decision with Amorim ultimately left paying the price

Had only INEOS done what was needed and parted ways with Erik ten Hag before the season began, we can only imagine how Manchester United’s situation would look right now.

Having just sustained a fifth defeat of his month-long Red Devils tenure, Ruben Amorim is already finding himself with the weight of the world on his shoulders, and truthfully, it’s down to the key decision-makers.

Amorim is navigating a side filled to the brim with Ten Hag’s chosen signings. Whether it be substandard ones who’d previously played under him, like Antony, high-earners who were on the decline from the moment they arrived at Old Trafford, like Casemiro, or questionable acquisitions who hadn’t even fared particularly well at their previous clubs, ie. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Yet, it’s the new head coach who’s now tasked with making such a mismatched team successful, and such a goal is becoming increasingly out of the realm of possibility with each passing gameweek.

Following an utterly despicable showing at the Molineux on Thursday, journalist Sam Pilger took to X/Twitter to share his reaction, writing: “It was beyond belief MUFC retained a manager who had finished 8th in the table and handed him another £200 million to spend. 8th!!!!

“That dreadful decision has damaged this season and all problems flow from it.”

He’s not wrong, either. Ten Hag’s FA Cup triumph last term glossed over the fact he’d just overseen United’s lowest-ever Premier League finish on record, after a campaign in which the side exited Europe at the earliest stage after losing four of their six group-stage games.

All speculation in the summer pointed towards the exit for the Dutchman, but when agreements failed to materialise between INEOS chiefs and their managerial candidates, Ten Hag’s contract was extended by an additional year, meaning Jim Ratcliffe and Co. are now paying off his £10.4 million severance package.

It also cost £11m to prise Amorim from Sporting Lisbon three months into the season. As a result, there are little to no funds available to bolster the lacklustre squad in the January window. A truly woeful state of affairs all around.

    1. I wonder if at some point Amorim is going to have to do what Ten Hag did in his first season – temporarily change his system to something more pragmatic to get us through to the summer. Then he can make a fresh start with pre-season training and new signings.

It didn’t work for Ten hag because he could never get his preferred system working and made bad signings. Hopefully Amorim is better.

      1. That’s good leadership 👏 👍 👌 thinking. Ruben Amorim just need to understand and accept that the team at his disposal can’t manage his preferred system, so waiting for the pre-season training activities and new signings would be ideal for him and the team to avoid relegation.

      2. Amorim should not have to compromise to suit those players. If he compromises and the results get better, Ineos and the Glazers will probably turn around and tell him to work with what he’s got

      3. No he shouldnt. Stick to his guns. If it means no Eutopean foitball for the next 2 years theb so be it. An overhaul is needed and has been for the last 9 years. Let Amorim do it. Hes young and has the energy and skills to do it. Dont do another stopgap like Ole, Mourinho, Van Gaal, Ten Hag.
Mourinho and Ragnick were right in the replacements needed.

  1. Should have been a season of evolution rather than revolution by giving Ruud the reigns and reserving Amorim for the summer of 2025. INEOS got lost in the mist of football pressure in this regard.

Either way this squad needs tweaks to certain positions to vastly improve it. I am confident that were Luke Shaw fit then his impact would have been great enough to get the team scoring goals and us be not so shit.

Alas it’s another shitshow and the new guy is going to stay here for 2 to 3 years before he gets sacked due to poor results and the club will have ruined another managerial career. Groundhog day is upon us with another exciting new manager.

  2. Mostly, I agree with ‘Not Rodriguez’, but with a little more hope.

If we get a new left back/wingback, and there are some candidates around who aren’t vastly expensive, that would be one improvement, because we could stop playing people out of position.

If we could add a bit of clinical finishing, then we’d be in a much better position

  4. I have said this so many times it didn’t matter who came in as manager.
We have a squad of second rate players other than two.
I feel so sorry for this new manager.
And with the Glazer still at the helm . Bring in Qatar buy the club get us out of debt build a new stadium and sort this bloody mess out once and for all. Bring back the glory days.

  5. People think eth had gotten most of his 1st choice signings… But that’s not the case
The board refused to get him so many players
Let me say this the club say they backed him with 200m and then they sacked him
It doesn’t make sense if those wer his signings why back him and then sack him
There was a article I read wer it said the board with give him a list of 3 players for each position that he wanted players in and he must pick one player from the 3
So it’s not eth giving them a list of players that he wants but these new players that has come in this season has been the owners players that they wanted
Anthony was his signing and that was a bad one

  6. Exactly Ruben Amorim have to change as the defeats are alarming and reflects badly on the new manager for wanting to implement a difficult 3-4-3 system, with a team comprising Erik ten Hag’s inept squad.
At least save this season with a decent finish as the other teams are also not having a perfect run, except for Liverpool.

  7. Man Porto United, living in the past glories.doesnt help at all. Build a team for the future, ignore the desperate sound of ill-advices from former players (pundits)

  8. These are professional football players. If they can’t change slightly to a new formation then they are either thick or just plain useless. Managers are not asking them to become brain surgeons.
Ineos are not covering themselves in glory by making so many people redundant and taking money away from the community we have at supported as a club for years.

  9. Totally agree Martin. They are professional football players who kick a feckin football!!! FFS!!! They just have to run a bit differently…..
