Newly-appointed Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admits his team lacked fluidity on his club debut against Ipswich Town.
The 39-year-old who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag made his bow as the Red Devils’ boss on Sunday afternoon at Portman Road.
The Portuguese had a dream start to the encounter, as Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock in the second minute thanks to a fabulous run and assist from Amad Diallo.
However, the stubborn Ipswich clawed their way back to the contest thanks to a deflected shot from Omari Hutchinson just a few minutes before the half-time whistle.
The Tractor Boys could have scored more if it wasn’t for Andre Onana’s heroics. In the end, the encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.
After the contest, Amorim admitted his team is still working on finding its rhythm, insisting it’s still early days, as his players are still adapting to his tactical formation.
“Not a good result but it is a tough league with high intensity. We started very well but should have had more of the ball. But we are learning,” said the new Man United boss in his post-match interview with BBC Sport.
“It was really hard for the players, they were thinking what to do, it was not fluid which is normal after just two training sessions but they tried hard.
“They have so much space to improve. But after a draw, you never take the good things. So I am really happy because they tried but they can do so much better.”
Manchester United Boss Ruben Amorim Promises Improvements in Time
Amorim explained that he currently lacks depth at the back, hence why he deployed Noussair Mazraoui, a full-back by trade, as a defender in his 3-4-2-1 system.
“We don’t have too many centre-backs so we have to adapt some players. I thought Noussair Mazraoui did very well.
“He is so smart and is so important for us. He can play anywhere and that kind of player is crucial for our future.”
The former Sporting CP manager is excited to join the Premier League, even though he was hoping to start with a victory.
“It is a great environment, a great spectacle. But when the game starts it is like I am back in Portugal or the third division. I am so focused, so everything is the same.
“You guys are so lucky to have the best league in the world. I am really happy to be here, but today, I don’t feel much because I like to win games.”
