Manchester United fans are hoping Ruben Amorim can use his connections to try and bring prolific frontman Viktor Gyokeres to Old Trafford next summer.
The coach took charge of his final game at the Jose Alvalade Stadium last night, defeating soon-to-be Manchester derby rivals Manchester City 4-1 in an unprecedented Champions League affair. Gyokeres made his mark on the clash, too, scoring a hat-trick to take his tally up to 23 goals for the season thus far.
He’s now only 20 goals away – after just 17 appearances – from matching last season’s extraordinary total of 43 goals in all competitions – plus 15 assists. Given the rate he’s been firing them in, who knows when he could reach, and subsequently overtake, his record?
Gyokeres has also earned widespread praise from Manchester United fans who tuned in on Tuesday evening to see their new head coach in the dugout, with supporters already fantasising about the prospect of the 26-year-old joining Amorim at the club next summer and finally putting a definitive end to their longstanding striker woes.
Gyokeres’ price tag revealed to Premier League admirers
Today, a report from The Times has revealed the exact price any interested sides will have to fork out to sign Gyokeres in 2025. As it stands, United, Chelsea and Arsenal are all thought to be mulling over a deal.
The Sweden international has an £83 million release clause embedded into his contract with Sporting Lisbon, although he did negotiate a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to ensure he can leave for a lower fee, which could be as low as £63m.
After the full-time whistle blew last night and Amorim was on media duties, he did rebuff the idea of signing his talisman for United in January out of respect for Sporting – but couldn’t rule out a potential summer swoop.
