Sky Sports pundit explains what Ruben Amorim ‘needs’ to succeed at Manchester United

Frank Lampard believes Manchester United have made an ‘exciting’ acquisition in Ruben Amorim but a lot will depend on whether he receives the right level of support from INEOS.

Lampard knows a thing or two about failing as a manager at Premier League level, so he’s probably not the best person to ask, but he believes United have made the right move by replacing Erik ten Hag with Sporting Lisbon’s Amorim.

Having previously managed Chelsea and Everton, Lampard states that United need to get the bigger picture right before they can plan for long-term success.

“I think this is a good, exciting acquisition but he needs to have the support,” Lampard said on Sky Sports’ coverage of the Premier League.

By that, Lampard means giving the head coach enough support to succeed, whereas under the Glazers it often felt managers were set up for failure. Former vice executive Ed Woodward proved to be a hindrance for former managers such as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United’s acquisition has been praised by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney as it shows United are beginning to operate like a top club once again.

It has been a long time coming, and INEOS can only do so much in a short time. Their ownership will be evaluated properly in the coming months or years.

The Portuguese coach has revealed he asked to delay his Manchester United start time until the end of the season but was told it was ‘now or never’.

This was how he defended his exit to Sporting fans, who must understand that is it an offer no manager could turn down.

Sporting are unbeaten after 10 matches this season and everything is going to plan for Amorim. He is about to leave that for the chaos that is Manchester United.

We wish him the best of luck.
