Spanish giants baulk at Mason Greenwood asking price

Atletico Madrid were seemingly left shocked at the asking price Manchester United are demanding for Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Getafe, who have made it clear they would like to retain Greenwood at the end of the season, but they won’t be able to pay the amount United are reportedly demanding for his signature.

Greenwood has not appeared for United since he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2022. However, the case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023. Shortly after that, it was decided that the academy graduate would continue his career elsewhere which led to the loan stint at Getafe.

The loan deal has been a success considering Getafe want to keep Greenwood, as well as the fact he’s gathering interest from bigger clubs in Spain.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid have expressed an interest in signing Greenwood this summer. The Spanish publication claim Atletico have been taken aback by United’s asking price – set at €58 million (£50m) – which is seen as ‘outrageous’ to the club showing an interest.

If outraged by such demands, it doesn’t look like Atletico will be meeting them anytime soon.

Greenwood has made 24 La Liga appearances for Getafe so far this season, scoring six goals and registering five assists. He has also scored two goals before Getafe were eliminated from the Copa del Rey.

Where next for Mason Greenwood?

I don’t think anyone knows right now. Sir Jim Ratcliffe said a fresh decision will be made at United on the matter, but I can’t see him coming back and representing the club ever again.

I could be wrong but most match-going fans won’t welcome him back and we can completely see why.

It will be interesting to see if the other big Spanish clubs show an interest in signing Greenwood. United will surely sell to the highest bidder.
