Sweden manager pleased with star’s decision to leave Manchester United

Newly appointed Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is pleased Anthony Elanga decided to leave Manchester United for Nottingham Forest last summer.

Elanga never looked like he was going to become a regular at United, so it made sense for all parties both parties to go their separate ways.

The Swedish winger made 55 appearances for United, scoring four goals and registering as many assists.

Elanga left Old Trafford as an academy graduate and earned a move to Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest. Since then he has become one of Forest’s best attacking players, scoring five goals across 31 appearances so far this season.

Sweden head coach Tomasson spoke to reporters ahead of tonight’s international friendly against Portugal. He believes Elanga has gained confidence following his transfer to Forest.

“It was a good choice for him to go to [Nottingham] Forest. There he gains more confidence and gets to play more or less every game. Players need to play 90 minutes each week. It was a good move and he has done well in England,” Tomasson said, as quoted by Fotbollskanalen.

It is often the case that a young player in the academy doesn’t make the required grade to become a first-team regular at United. That said, the club takes great pride in developing players who end up building careers elsewhere.

Elanga has proven himself as a good option for Premier League clubs.
