‘He is ready’: Fernandes speaks out on United’s links with one of Europe’s brightest prospects

Joao Neves has found himself linked to almost every major European club over the past year, with Manchester United being one of them.

The 19-year-old starlet has become a mainstay on Benfica’s teamsheet this term, starting 21 of 26 matches played as they mount another title race with cross-city rivals Sporting Lisbon.

He’s also earned three senior caps for Portugal since making his debut in October 2023 and is likely to add more to his name during the forthcoming international break after being called up by Roberto Martinez.

Currently, it is believed that United are scouring the market for Casemiro’s successor, making it no surprise that Neves has reportedly been shortlisted by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is gearing up for his first transfer window of the INEOS era this summer.

Casemiro, 32, is the club’s highest earner on a whopping £350,000 per week. He has been unavailable for 18 matches this term due to three separate injury complaints, raising doubts over his suitability for a first-team role beyond this campaign.

Outlets have previously claimed that Neves’ terms with Benfica contain a release clause of around €120 million (£102m). They never sell their prospects for cheap as it is, plus they’re well aware of the calibre of the clubs that could enter the race for his signature. If they’re made to part ways with their prospect, they may as well make a pretty penny from it.

Neves ready to take the leap in his career

Bruno Fernandes will likely line up with Neves over the coming week for their nation’s double-header of friendlies. He was quizzed on United’s links to the midfielder although, as expected, he didn’t give too much away.

“I don’t know if United rumours are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump. He is an excellent player, he’s with the national team… that’s also why the big clubs are after him,” the club captain told Sport TV, as cited by Fabrizio Romano.
