Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes that Manchester United missed a trick by allowing Sergio Reguilon to end his loan spell in January, when they had an option to keep the Spanish left-back until the end of the season.
The Reds have been plagued by injuries this season, particularly across the back four with several key players missing and our new goalkeeper unable to settle on the back four in front of him. Thankfully Andre Onana looks like a goalkeeper growing in confidence as his performance since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations have been consistent and less error prone.
As we know all too well, the left-back position has been a serious headache for Erik ten Hag. Not only has the manager been without his primary option, with Luke Shaw absent again with a long-term blow, while back-up option Tyrell Malacia hasn’t been seen all season. This has led to Ten Hag being forced to play Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot out of position.
At the start of the season, United went into the market for a left-back on loan and controversially signed Reguilon. He didn’t pull up any trees but did an alright job when called upon. He should nothing to warrant a longer spell at the club when Ten Hag was under the impress Shaw was nearing full fitness.
Reguilon, 27, ended up returning to Tottenham in January before being shipped back out to Brentford until the end of the season.
Speaking on talkSPORT (as quoted by HITC), Agbonlahor claimed that United made a mistake by letting the 27-year-old leave, saying: “Letting Reguilon go was a mistake, wasn’t it?
“You have got Lindelof playing there. He could do a job, but that could cost you in the last 10 games. Injuries have been a big problem, haven’t they?”
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Especially for those that make a living from slating United.
Agbonlahor is one of those, regularly appearing in columns with quotes criticising everything he can about the club. A lot of it complete rubbish, but you learn to take everything he says with a pinch of salt. His main employee talkSPORT don’t hold back when it comes to their pundits using their weekly slots to slate the Reds. We’re used to it and can see through their business model.
I mean, of course, looking back on his decision Ten Hag may have some regret but it’s petty for Agbonlahor to use this as another stick to beat United with.
