‘Crying like a kid’: Defender was told to ‘relax’ by United teammate after emotional reaction to Carabao Cup exit

Sergio Reguilon has detailed his emotional reaction to Manchester United’s Carabao Cup exit last November.

The Spaniard – now at Brentford – spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Old Trafford to provide coverage for injured left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, with the former returning to action briefly before sustaining another long-term layoff.

Reguilon’s temporary move was cut short at the beginning of the January window and he was sent back to Tottenham Hotspur, which, upon reflection, was not the wisest move from United’s end. They are still without any recognised players in the position, meaning centre-half Victor Lindelof has been called upon to deputise on the left flank.

On the other hand, the Spurs loanee perhaps wasn’t being granted as much game time as he’d have liked and often suffered with fitness setbacks himself. He made 12 appearances in all competitions – six as a starter.

One of his starts included a fourth-round Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle United at Old Trafford in what formed an early tie between last season’s finalists. Of course, the Reds reigned victorious at Wembley and so entered this term’s tournament as the holders of the trophy.

In one of their most dismal, uninspired showings of the campaign, United fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the travelling Magpies and consequently, wrote off the prospect of retaining the silverware for another year.

Reguilon’s immediate reaction to cup exit

Reguilon has revealed how badly he took the loss, telling The Times“We were defending the title and we were out. I don’t care if I am here for six months, I was upset. I don’t know how long I was crying like a kid. Bruno [Fernandes] comes to tell me to relax and I still have the same shit face.

“It’s my problem, I am too emotional. I feel everything in football, just like my life. I have to control that more but it’s always been part of me, since I was a kid.”
