Manchester United are among the clubs closely monitoring Roberto De Zerbi’s situation amid an uncertain future for Erik ten Hag, as per The Telegraph.
Speculation over Ten Hag’s position has been rampant for a while now, particularly after the club exited the Champions League at the earliest stage and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup, a trophy that they held, in the fourth round.
United also face a top-four battle yet again and given that they currently sit 11 points away, every dropped point sees the prospect of rubbing shoulders with Europe’s elite next term slip further out of their reach.
Meanwhile, De Zerbi has continued to receive plaudits for the job he’s done since being cherry-picked as Graham Potter’s successor at the Amex. Last term, he led the Seagulls to a sixth-placed finish, earning them European football for the first time in their history. They’ve since reached the last-16 of the Europa League and are preparing to take on Roma this Thursday.
Mike McGrath’s report adds that should United try and cut short De Zerbi’s contract, which runs until 2026, they’ll have to pay a compensation fee upwards of £12 million.
Senior figures at Old Trafford are believed to be weighing up the future of the Dutchman and whether he will be granted a third season at the reins of the 20-time champions. It remains to be seen if winning the FA Cup would have an impact on their decision-making.
