La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas, has made it very clear that he would like to see the on-loan Getafe forward prolong his football career in Spain.
It is rather astonishing to hear the president of La Liga say Greenwood’s past does not concern him.
“I’m a lawyer,” Tebas said, as quoted by The Guardian. “For someone that has come pout of a legal case innocent, there’s nothing to say. I think it’s good because he’s another great player. Maybe the circumstances have made it easier for him to come, but he’s a great player and I have got no other comments to make.
“He’s doing really well at Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and continues to stay in Spanish football, because that’s always good for us. When someone isn’t condemned, what should we have done? This is what courts exist for. It is not up to me to know his case in detail. He is just another player.”
The 22-year-old joined Getafe on loan from Manchester United last September – seven months after the Crown Prosecution Service announced that criminal proceedings against him over an alleged attempted rape had been dropped.
Greenwood had previously been suspended by United and the club carried out an internal investigation into the matter, before eventually deciding that it would be best if the player continued his playing career elsewhere.
Life in Spain has been a positive experience for Greenwood. There has been negative publicity at times, with Jude Bellingham recently accused of calling him a ‘r*pist’ during Getafe’s encounter with Real Madrid, but for the most part he is enjoying his football.
When asked about the La Liga’s investigation into what Bellingham said to Greenwood, Tebas added: “La Liga investigated Bellingham and let’s see what happens. It is not the first time we have done a lip-reading investigation and maybe he didn’t say what we think.”
With five goals in La Liga, Tebas is keen for Greenwood to remain there for his long term future.
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has confirmed that the club will make a fresh decision on Greenwood’s future.
The forward has also been linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona.
