Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is getting fed up of seeing his name in the rumour mill every day, with Manchester United regularly mentioned as long-term admirers waiting to pounce at the chance of signing one of Erik ten Hag’s top targets from previous transfer windows.

The latest reports suggest Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing the Netherlands international. That means United and co are likely to face competition should they reignite their interest in De Jong.

United should be trying to avoid another dragged out saga by finding out exactly where De Jong wants to play his football next season. The last time he ended up staying put at Barcelona, which could easily happen again in the summer.

Spanish publication Sport reports that United and Chelsea are monitoring De Jong’s situation at Barca, but they also add that his current situation is a complicated one with PSG also interested.

However, the 26-year-old has been left frustrated by the constant speculation surrounding his future at Camp Nou.

De Jong was speaking to reporters before Barcelona’s Champions League last 16 clash against Napoli when he expressed his frustration.

“Lately, I have been a little angry about what the press in general writes,” De Jong told reporters (H/t Sport). “Things come out that are not normal. I cannot understand why things are said that are not true. Aren’t you a little ashamed? All this is irritating me a little.

“You talk about my salary when there is a lot of smoke. If I earn almost €40 million… it is very far from what I earn. I will not say figures, but it is not true. I am very happy at Barça; it is the club of my dreams, and I hope I can continue here for many years.”

Barcelona manager Xavi backed his player, adding: “I understand it perfectly. Any player who is at Barca feels injustice because lies are told about him. [De Jong is a] very important and capital player for the team.”
