‘Strong belief’ – Denmark assistant manager credits Rasmus Hojlund’s amazing mentality

Rasmus Hojlund took his Premier League tally to 7 seasons this season with a first-half brace against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon.

The Denmark international, 21, is full of confidence now he’s scoring goals for fun after struggling to get on the scoresheet in the Premier League earlier this season – while scoring 5 in the group stages of the Champions League.

Following a summer move from Serie A side Atalana, Hojlund went 14 games without a goal, which put a lot of pressure on his shoulders after costing United £72 million in an inflated market for centre forwards.

Hojlund has scored in six consecutive Premier League matches to become the youngster players to do so after beating Joe Willock’s previous record.

Danish outlet Tipsbladet have done an interview with Denmark assistant manager Morten Wieghorst, who shared his thoughts on Hojlund, who has been on fire for United recently.

“It’s been fantastic to witness. For the team, it has been a tough time, but Rasmus has persisted. Firstly, he has an amazing mentality – that’s also what is being said over there. He has kept his composure no matter what has been said or written.

“We have to remember that he is still young and playing for a huge club. What he is doing at the moment is great primarily for Rasmus himself, but also for Manchester United, and ultimately for the Danish national team. It’s really good. Of course, we hope he continues, and I have no doubt about it.

“There are huge expectations in a club like United. Again, I have to emphasise that Rasmus is very young, but he has kept his composure and focused on what he can control. That’s what he does daily on the training ground, and what he certainly does and has done on the pitch for United. Ultimately, that’s the most important thing for a professional footballer in his position.

“He has such strong belief in himself and his teammates, so he doesn’t let himself be affected by what is said and written.”

Hojlund, a match-winner

United made the perfect start against Rob Edwards’ side, taking the lead inside a minute when Amari’I misjudged pass was latched onto by Hojlund.

The Dane drove the ball forward and around the goalkeeper before he opened the scoring.

That lead was doubled minutes later.

Hojlund, again, on target but with use of his chest to deflect Alejandro Garnacho’s effort into the back of the net.

The Hatters pulled one back in the 14th minute and they hit the crossbar in stoppage time.
